Gov. Ritter Announces Veterans Green Jobs will Provide San Luis Valley Energy Work

Gov. Bill Ritter today announced that Veterans Green Jobs has been selected by the state energy office to provide weatherization services to income-qualified households in a six-county region of the San Luis Valley.

“We’re proud to have these service veterans join our New Energy Economy,” Gov. Ritter said. “These men and women have served their country admirably in the military, and now they return to serve again to help Colorado families reduce energy costs, increase our energy security and decrease our carbon footprint.”

VGJ Attends Operation Free in Washington DC

On September 10th, four members of Veterans Green Jobs joined 150 veterans from around the country in Washington D.C. to speak out against U.S. dependence on fossil fuels, and to call for action against the national security threat of climate change. Hosted by OperationFREE , this meeting brought veterans together with state senators to discuss the important relationship between current sources of energy and national security.

Veterans Green Jobs and Whole Foods Market Broadway announce the Music on the Mainstage fundraiser concert.

On the morning of the 22nd of June, myself and 7 other OIF/OEF Veterans embarked on a trail clearing hitch in the back country forest of the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. In 10 days we humped 70 (+) lb packs over 34 miles of nearly abandoned woods, all the while leaving no trace of our temporal presence. Days began as early as 5 am and after 10 or so hours of cross-cut sawing, drain construction and general trail maintenance, I had little difficulty falling asleep with the sun.

At the graduation ceremony, Gov. Ritter announced that VGJ, in collaboration with NREL Education Programs, will establish Colorado’s first National Training and Demonstration Center in Energy Efficiency. “This initiative will retrofit unused commercial property, for example, a big-box store now standing vacant on acres of empty parking lots,” Ritter said.

George Webb left the Army in 1989 and, for a while, drove trucks for a living. At a low point, he spent four or five years living on the streets. But Tuesday afternoon, Webb graduated from a new two-month program certified to evaluate the energy efficiency of homes and the promise of a job maintaining a biodiesel plant in New Orleans. He found the training through a group that aids homeless vets.

Garett Reppenhagen, a veteran who served as a sniper in Iraq and in Kosovo, was also at the Task Force meeting. Garett is a member of Veterans Green Jobs, an organization representing veterans of every branch of military who have enrolled in the Veterans Green Jobs Academy, a training and deployment program in energy efficiency and conservation.
