Weatherization Services: Saying ‘Goodbye’ to Army Blankets on the Walls

“I’m hoping our bills will go down by $100 a month.” – Renee

Renee and her grandson are looking forward to a more comfortable winter.

Renee Shirley and her family spend most of their time in their home’s living room. But it is the coldest room in the house. “In the winter, we staple Army blankets to the walls to keep the cold air out,” she says.

This winter, however, Renee will no longer need to take those extra measures to keep her home warm. She anticipates a much cozier experience, thanks to Veterans Green Jobs.

She qualified for Veterans Green Jobs’ free home weatherization services as a recipient of assistance from the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP). “I was thrilled we qualified,” she says.

After a Veterans Green Jobs energy auditor inspected Renee’s home, he determined that she was eligible to receive a new furnace and a new water heater; wall, attic and basement insulation; and window sealing. These upgrades would make Renee’s home healthier, safer and more energy efficient.

The 1979 home was built on bentonite clay, and has shifted over the years – causing gaps that allow cold air to seep in. To remedy
this, Renee sprays ‘Great Stuff’ foam on the exposed dirt floor beneath the heater, in addition to shielding her walls with blankets and adhering plastic to the windows. Still, Renee says, “Our heating bill is about $400 in the winter.”

Renee appreciates the professional quality of services she received from Veterans Green Jobs. She speaks of Walter Heppard, the furnace technician who serviced her home.

“The minute Walt walked in the door, I could tell he knew what he was doing. It was clear he understood boilers. I trusted him.”

Being a U.S. Army veteran herself, Renee relates to the Veterans Green Jobs mission. “I’m hoping it’s a way to give veterans jobs.”

For Renee, the upgrades to her home will bring more comfort as well as financial rewards. “We’ll be warmer this year. And I’m hoping our bills will go down by at least $100 a month.”
