“I feel like I won the lottery.” – David Sneed
David Sneed’s family of five has been living in a house with no insulation in its walls. Built in 1902 as a summer cabin, the house is situated at 8,000 feet in the hills west of Denver, and winters are cold. They have a hard time keeping warm
when cold weather sets in.
“We’re always trying to put our finger in the dike,” David says, referring to the cold air that seeps through his home’s windows and doors. “The whole house is drafty. In cold weather we all wear our long underwear and crank up the space heaters.”
When the Sneeds received a letter from the Low-Income Energy Assistance program notifying them that they qualified for free energy efficiency services, David seized the opportunity. He contacted Veterans Green Jobs, whose weatherization crew replaced his furnace and refrigerator; insulated the attic, walls, floor and crawlspace; installed storm windows; and air-sealed the doors.
It added up to what would have been a complex project for David to do on his own. In the past, he had done some weather stripping and sprayed foam on the windows, but admits it wasn’t very effective.
“Weatherization is a comprehensive process. We wouldn’t have known how to do it,” he says. For David, who is a seasonal worker as an arborist, professional weatherization was cost prohibitive. “Financially, it was just out of reach.”
In addition to getting the upgrades at no cost from Veterans Green Jobs, David stands to benefit from lower utility bills from now on. On average, David has been paying about $230 per month on electric and gas bills. He expects these costs to go down now that his home’s energy efficiency has been improved.
But most importantly, his family will be more comfortable. “Finding out that my 17-year-old was sleeping in an uninsulated area was troubling. Now we won’t have to use space heaters as much to keep warm.”
David’s family is grateful for the services Veterans Green Jobs provided. “When you’re trying to save your home, it’s hard to think of anything else. We just need to cover the basics and put food on the table. With these free services, I feel like I won the lottery.”
