Weatherization Services: Looking Forward to a Warmer Winter

“I seal my windows with Scotch tape in the fall, but that doesn’t work.” Isabelle

Isabelle has lived in her home in Golden since 1967 when the house was built. At 93 years old, Isabelle has suffered for decades from cold winters and hot summers due to her home’s poor insulation and leaky windows.

In addition to her discomfort throughout the seasons, Isabelle’s utility bills have skyrocketed. “Two years ago, my water bill was $300,” she says. Luckily, Colorado’s Low Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) helps pay for her water and heating.

Unfortunately, the comfort of financial support isn’t enough to make her warmer in the cold months – even with the thermostat set at 71 degrees.

“I freeze in the winter. I seal my single pane windows with Scotch® tape in the fall, but that doesn’t work too well. The floor heaters help, but the hallway to the bedroom is always drafty. And even though I had a new furnace installed five years ago, the vent leaks cold air into the house,” she reports.

In summertime, Isabelle faces the opposite problem: With no air-conditioning, her home gets very warm. She keeps the window shades pulled to keep hot air and sun out.

When LEAP sent Isabelle a letter telling her she was eligible for Veterans Green Jobs’ free weatherization services, she made an appointment to have an auditor come to the house for an inspection. The auditors determined that thicker insulation should be installed in the attic and crawlspace, leaky holes in vents needed to be plugged, doors should be weather stripped, and windows should be sealed.

Isabelle doesn’t know yet what a difference these services will make in her utility bills – the measures were implemented in June 2010 – but she is hoping for a much warmer winter.

With a look of hope, Isabelle says, “I can’t wait to see how much more comfortable I’ll be.”
